Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. There are two systems:
Public (GKV) — ~14.6% of gross salary
Mandatory if you earn under €69,300/year. Covers you and non-working family members. ~105 providers to choose from.
Private (PKV) — varies by age & health

Germany has progressive income tax rates from 14% to 45% plus Solidaritatszuschlag (5.5% of income tax). You are assigned a Steuerklasse (tax class) that determines monthly withholding.
Key tax classes:
- Class I — Single (default)
- Class III/V — Married, one higher earner
- Class IV — Married, equal earners
Filing an annual Steuererklaerung is optional for Class I but often yields a €1,000+ refund. It is mandatory for Class III/V.

- Kundigungsfrist — Notice period (standard: 3 months)

The Schufa is Germany's credit scoring agency. Your score (0-100) affects renting, banking, phone contracts, and more. New expats start with no score, which can cause rejections.
How to build your Schufa:
- Open a German bank account and use it regularly
- Pay all bills on time (rent, phone, internet)
- Avoid multiple credit inquiries in a short period
- Request your free annual Schufa report (Datenkopie)
8. Rundfunkbeitrag (Broadcasting Fee)
€18.36/month per household. Mandatory regardless of whether you own a TV. You'll receive a registration letter shortly after your Anmeldung.
Ignoring it leads to late fees, then enforcement through the courts. Register at rundfunkbeitrag.de and set up direct debit.
